The Faculty of Engineering
The
Faculty of Engineering is spread among various buildings, the most
representative
is the old monastery of San Pietro in Vincoli (San Peter in Chains), which
accomodate the specializations courses, the faculty's Presidenza and the
Doctorates' Hall (the hall in which most of the conference will be
carried out).
While the faculty has lost nowadays most
of the old monastery charm, because of the works made to enlarge
the available spaces, the cloister area (probably built between 1493 and
1503) has maintained the ancient charm, though has undergo through several
modifications. In these days works are made to restore
its original design, which Vasari attributed to Giuliano da
Sangallo.
At the center of the cloister there is a decorated
well which has been used as the symbol of the faculty of engineering.
In the cloister area are the two most
prestigeous faculty halls: the Doctorates' Hall and the "Aula del Chiostro",
often visited by turists due to its frescoed ceiling.
An ancient
tale:
An ancient tale connects the name of Eudossia
and San pietro in Vincoli: the empress Eudossia, wife of Teodosio
II (408-550), emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, sent from Costantinoples to his daughter
Eudossia "minore" part of the chains ("vincoli") of San Peter which she
found at Jerusalem. These chains were donated to the Pope Leone Magno which
put them near the ones that hold San Peter during his roman captivity,
and the miracle happened: the two chains melted together forming a unique
one.
